How this estimate is calculated
Every figure and assumption behind this calculator is listed here — nothing is hidden:
- National base costs come from the Genworth / CareScout 2025 Cost of Care Survey: home health aide ~$80,080/year, assisted living ~$74,400/year, nursing home semi-private room ~$114,975/year, nursing home private room ~$129,575/year.
- State adjustment. Real state-level data is published for assisted living (SeniorLiving.org, 2026) — that's what powers our by-state cost table. For the other three care types, we apply that same state's assisted-living cost relative to the national assisted-living median (~$6,313/month) as an index, and scale the national figure for your chosen care type by it. That's a reasonable estimate of regional cost difference, not a directly published figure for that specific care type in your state.
- Cost growth. Your chosen annual rate is compounded from today to the year care is assumed to start, then compounded again for each year of care within the duration you selected — so a longer wait and a longer care need both grow the total, the way they would in reality.
- What this doesn't include: insurance premiums, taxes, or benefits from any policy. This calculator estimates the underlying cost of care itself — what a policy (or your own savings) would actually need to cover. See how coverage works to connect this number to what a policy could pay for.
General estimate only, for education — not a quote, and not insurance, tax, or financial advice. Real costs vary by provider, county, and year; a personalized comparison is the only way to get an actual number for your situation.
