Long-term care doesn't wait for old age

Loyd was the first in his family to go to college, a military veteran, and a devoted husband and father of four. In his mid-40s — with, by every expectation, decades ahead of him — he developed vague digestive trouble that no one could diagnose.

A year later, a heart attack revealed the real cause: stage III lung cancer that had already spread to his vital organs. He was given months to live. Radiation and chemotherapy slowed the disease and bought some time, but left him weak, and he returned home to his family.

Over the following months Loyd needed steadily more help with the basic necessities of life, until he became bedridden. He died at 45, having spent his final ten months cared for at home.

What his story teaches: long-term care is usually imagined as a nursing-home decision for the very old. Loyd's family learned it can arrive suddenly, in the prime of life — and that "care" most often means help at home, given by the people who love you.
