What discounts are available on long-term care insurance?
The biggest long-term care insurance discounts are the spousal/couples discount (about 15% to 30%), a preferred-health discount for good health, and group or association discounts.
Three discounts do most of the work:
- Spousal / couples discount — about 15% to 30% when both partners apply, and sometimes available even if only one is approved. This is usually the largest.
- Preferred-health discount — good health at application earns a lower rate class.
- Group or association discount — coverage offered through an employer or association can come at a reduced rate, sometimes with easier underwriting.
You can often combine these, and sensible policy design — a reasonable benefit period and elimination period — lowers the premium further.
