Does long-term care insurance pay family caregivers?
Sometimes. Traditional reimbursement policies usually pay only licensed providers, but cash or indemnity policies pay a set monthly benefit you can use however you want — including paying a family member. Check whether yours reimburses expenses or pays cash.
It depends on how your policy pays out. There are two models:
- Reimbursement policies pay for actual care expenses from licensed providers or agencies — these usually will not pay a family member directly.
- Cash or indemnity policies pay the full daily or monthly benefit once you qualify, regardless of who provides the care — so you can use that money to pay a family caregiver.
Some reimbursement policies also add a specific family-care or caregiver-training benefit. If having the option to pay a family member is important to you, look for a cash/indemnity design or ask about the family-care provision before you buy.
